Banjo and Kazooie are pulled back into action when Gruntilda escapes the boulder that buried her at the end of Banjo-Kazooie. With sisters Mingella and Blobbelda, she plans to use the Big O'Blaster (B.O.B.) to drain the life from the island. Banjo's blue backpack and Kazooie's breegull moves return, but Rare builds a larger interconnected adventure through areas including Witchyworld, Jolly Roger's Lagoon, and Hailfire Peaks.

Exploration mixes platforming, puzzle solving, collectibles, enemy fights, and abilities learned from Jamjars. Banjo and Kazooie can separate, shoot while flying or swimming, carry one another, hatch eggs, and use special shoes or transformations to reach new routes. Mumbo Jumbo and Humba Wumba add world-specific magic and transformations. Four-player multiplayer repurposes challenges into 14 mini-games, including soccer, bumper cars, and egg-shooting.
Start by mapping entrances and noting which moves each world teaches; many collectibles require returning after a new ability. The original Nintendo 64 version launched in 2000 in North America and Japan, with Europe following in 2001. Xbox 360, Rare Replay, and Nintendo Switch Online are later ports or re-releases, while Banjo-Kazooie and Nuts & Bolts are separate games.
