Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn begins with the player character imprisoned and tortured by the wizard Irenicus. Escape leads into Athkatla, the crowded capital of Amn, where the party must find Imoen, learn why the captor wants the protagonist's soul, and raise the money and allies needed to continue. The route passes through city districts, forests, ruins, islands, strongholds, and other parts of the Forgotten Realms, with optional quests that can reshape the party's resources and relationships.

The original BioWare RPG uses AD&D 2nd Edition rules through the Infinity Engine. Build a protagonist, recruit companions with different classes and personalities, then issue orders in real time while pausing to choose attacks, spells, formations, and targets. Dialogue, reputation, alignment, class abilities, party conflicts, romances, and stronghold quests make party composition part of the story as well as combat.

Use the pause key often, especially when enemies enter from several directions. Give the party a frontline, reliable ranged damage, healing or protection, and someone who can handle locks and traps. Keep spare weapons and scrolls, identify unusual items, and save before major conversations or dungeon doors. The journal and map are useful records, not decoration.

This entry is the original 2000 Shadows of Amn campaign, without the Throne of Bhaal expansion and without Beamdog's 2013 Enhanced Edition additions, new characters, or modern interface changes.
