Age of Mythology: Retold rebuilds the fantasy strategy game around gods, heroes, and armies. Food, wood, and gold support a settlement, while Favor pays for mythological units and powers. How you earn Favor depends on your pantheon, so changing civilizations can require a different approach to the economy as well as the army.

The Greek, Egyptian, Norse, and Atlantean pantheons form the base roster. A major god sets the starting bonuses and available choices, and selecting minor gods while advancing through the ages unlocks further myth units, technologies, and god powers. Heroes counter myth units, but still need support from an army that can deal with ordinary soldiers and siege.

The campaigns take players through locations including Troy, Egypt, and the Norse lands. Skirmishes provide repeatable battles against the AI, while multiplayer supports cooperative and competitive play. Arena of the Gods adds a separate series of mythic challenges that can be played alone or in co-op.

Retold launched on PC and Xbox Series X|S in September 2024 and later reached PlayStation 5. Chinese mythology is part of the Immortal Pillars expansion; Japanese mythology is part of Heavenly Spear. Those additions are separate from the four base pantheons, so a guide for the original roster does not require buying every expansion.
