Profile

The Princess Diaries follows Mia Thermopolis, a San Francisco teenager who learns that she is heir to the throne of Genovia. Queen Clarisse Renaldi, Mia's grandmother, begins teaching her how to handle royal duties while Mia tries to keep up with school, friendships, family, and the sudden attention around her. Garry Marshall directed the 2001 film, which introduced Anne Hathaway as Mia and stars Julie Andrews as Clarisse. The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement continues Mia's story in Genovia. Now preparing to become queen, she discovers that the country's law requires her to marry before she can inherit the crown. The 2004 sequel brings Hathaway and Andrews back, adds Chris Pine as Nicholas Devereaux, and remains the second released film in the series. A third Princess Diaries movie is in development, with Hathaway expected to return and Adele Lim attached to direct, but Disney has not announced a release date. The story below follows the latest confirmed status. Readers looking for the released story can watch the 2001 original first and Royal Engagement second; no extra series or spin-off is required between them.
