Marvel Officially Announced Season 2
The eight-episode first season arrived on Disney+ on January 27, 2026. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II played Simon Williams, an actor hiding dangerous powers, while Ben Kingsley returned as Trevor Slattery. Their friendship and their attempt to land roles in a Wonder Man movie drove the series.
On March 23, Marvel published an official announcement saying Wonder Man would return for Season 2. Abdul-Mateen and Kingsley were set to come back. Co-creators Destin Daniel Cretton and Andrew Guest were also returning, with Guest continuing as showrunner and executive producer.
Marvel television chief Brad Winderbaum said the season was in full development. Marvel did not announce an episode count, filming date, or release window, but the renewal went beyond an idea that the creators hoped to pursue.
The creative team had also discussed where the story would go next. Guest said Season 2 would deal with Simon and Trevor's legal problems while keeping their friendship and acting careers at the center. A June Variety profile described a writers' room working on the new season.
Those comments gave viewers a clear expectation that the same small-scale comedy would continue. Cretton said the team did not plan to turn Wonder Man into a different type of Marvel show for its second year. The renewal was presented as a continuation of Simon and Trevor's story, not a placeholder announcement for a project that still needed its basic direction.
Variety Says the Renewal Has Been Reversed
Variety now reports that Disney+ is no longer moving forward with Season 2. Its sources say a formal writers' room was never opened and that writers were released to find other work.
That description does not fully match Variety's June report, which said the writers' room was already working. Early development may have happened without a formally staffed room, or the two articles may be using the term differently. No public source has explained the difference.
The report also says the characters could still appear in other Marvel projects. Ending the Disney+ series would not automatically remove Simon Williams or Trevor Slattery from the MCU. The first season remains available to stream.
Simon is already connected to the wider Marvel world through his powers and the Department of Damage Control, while Trevor has appeared in Iron Man 3 and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Marvel could use either character again without producing another full season of Wonder Man.
Marvel and Disney Have Not Confirmed It
As of July 30, Marvel and Disney had not posted a cancellation notice or given an on-record explanation. Marvel's official Season 2 announcement and its Season 2 title page were still available when this article was prepared. Variety does not quote a company spokesperson in its report.
Variety has a strong record of reporting television decisions before studios announce them, so the report should be taken seriously. The headline still needs the word reportedly until Marvel or Disney confirms the decision.
Low viewing numbers could be one explanation, but no source has confirmed that they caused the reported cancellation. Disney did not release its own audience total. Nielsen measured 618 million US viewing minutes during the first week, placing Wonder Man eighth among streaming originals, before it left that top 10 the following week.
The series also received strong reviews, and Abdul-Mateen earned an Emmy nomination for lead actor in a comedy series. Reviews and awards can help a show, but streaming services also consider completion rates, cost, subscriber interest, and longer plans for the characters. Disney has not said which factors were used here.
For now, the confirmed record is straightforward: Marvel renewed Wonder Man and publicly started Season 2 development. Variety says Disney+ has stopped that season before production. Until Marvel or Disney responds, the cancellation remains reported rather than official.
