The doors to Wildwood are almost open. LAIKA has released the final trailer for its stop-motion fantasy and put U.S. tickets on sale for an October 23 theatrical opening. The new footage gives Prue McKeel’s rescue mission a much bigger scale than the first look did.
Select theaters will also show the film in 4DX, DBOX and Dolby Cinema. Those formats depend on the theater, so a regular ticket listing does not mean every premium option is available in that location.
Prue is trying to bring her brother home
The story begins when a flock of crows takes Prue’s baby brother. She follows them into the Impassable Wilderness, a hidden forest beyond Portland, with her classmate Curtis Mehlberg. Talking animals, bandits and rival figures stand between the children and a way back home.
The final trailer shows that the kidnapping is only the beginning. Prue’s search puts her inside a wider fight over the forest itself. LAIKA has not revealed the ending, and the footage does not explain which side every character will take.
Who voices Prue and Curtis?
Peyton Elizabeth Lee voices Prue, and Jacob Tremblay voices Curtis. The larger cast includes Carey Mulligan, Mahershala Ali, Angela Bassett, Awkwafina, Jake Johnson, Charlie Day, Amandla Stenberg, Jemaine Clement, Maya Erskine, Tantoo Cardinal, Tom Waits and Richard E. Grant.
Travis Knight directs and produces, with a screenplay by Chris Butler. The film adapts the novel by Colin Meloy, illustrated by Carson Ellis. LAIKA says its characters and environments were built and animated by hand, frame by frame. That craft is part of the appeal here: the trailer is full of dense forests and creatures with a physical, touchable feel.
Tickets, premiere and release date
The U.S. theatrical release is October 23. Wildwood is also set to open AFI FEST on October 21 before it reaches cinemas nationwide. Fathom Entertainment is handling the U.S. release; the distributor has not announced a streaming date in this update.
