Ted Lasso looked finished when Ted left Richmond and returned to Kansas. Season 4 brings him back on August 5, but it does not pretend that goodbye never happened. Ted returns to England for a new job: coaching a second-division women's football team.
According to Apple TV's official announcement, the premiere arrives with one episode, followed by a new episode every Wednesday through October 7. The schedule gives the show ten weeks to prove that Ted still has more to offer than another round of familiar jokes and locker-room speeches.
Ted Has to Start Over Again
Richmond is familiar to Ted, but this team is not. The players are competing in the second division, they have their own history, and they did not live through the three seasons that turned AFC Richmond into a family. Ted has to earn their trust instead of walking into a room where everyone already knows what he stands for.
Tanya Reynolds is one of the most visible new faces beside Jason Sudeikis. Apple has not shared every detail about how her character fits into the club, but the first images place her close to Ted and the team. Jude Mack, Faye Marsay, Rex Hayes, Aisling Sharkey, Abbie Hern, and Grant Feely also join the cast.
A women's team cannot feel like AFC Richmond with different shirts. The players need their own personalities, rivalries, and reasons for caring about promotion. Ted also needs to listen before he starts fixing anything. He knows football better than he did in Season 1, but he is entering a part of the sport with a different culture and different pressures.
The level of attention around the team should be part of the story as well. Women's clubs often have to fight for coverage, better facilities, and the belief that their success deserves the same seriousness as the men's game. Ted's support can help, but the players should not need him to explain their value. They already know why the team matters to them.
The setup gives the series a natural way to bring back its hopeful tone without repeating the same underdog season. A second-division club has practical problems: money, facilities, attention, and the constant risk of losing its best players. Those problems can challenge Ted in ways that have nothing to do with whether he understands the offside rule.
The Return Has Something to Prove
Season 3 gave Ted a complete ending. He went home to be closer to his son, and Richmond moved forward without him. Bringing him back creates an obvious concern for fans who liked that farewell. If the new season only wants everyone in the same room again, the return could make the old ending feel temporary.
The returning cast helps, but it also raises questions. Hannah Waddingham, Juno Temple, Brett Goldstein, Brendan Hunt, and Jeremy Swift are all back. Rebecca, Keeley, Roy, Beard, and Higgins have changed since Ted first arrived. Their stories should continue instead of waiting for him to become the center of every decision again.
Ted's own reason for returning may be the most important part. He chose his family at the end of Season 3. The new episodes need to explain what changed and what this move costs him. A cheerful airport arrival will not be enough for viewers who remember how seriously the show treated his distance from his son.
There is another difference from the show's first season: Ted is not lost anymore. He understands Richmond, English football, and the people around him. The comedy cannot depend on him misunderstanding the sport forever. It can come from a coach who has learned a great deal and still discovers that experience with one team does not give him every answer for the next one.
There is still plenty to be excited about. Sudeikis and Waddingham remain a strong pair, Richmond is a place viewers enjoy returning to, and the new team gives the writers room to introduce people who are not carrying three seasons of story. Ted Lasso works best when kindness requires real effort from everyone involved. Season 4 has a better chance if these players challenge Ted as much as he hopes to help them.
