Angela Bassett is excited to see David Jonsson become Marvel’s new Black Panther. The actor, who played Queen Ramonda in the first two Black Panther films, said she is “over the moon” about the casting and cannot wait to see what he does with the role.
Jonsson was introduced at San Diego Comic-Con in July as the next hero to wear the Black Panther mantle. Marvel also confirmed that his character is the son of T’Challa.

Bassett said fans were happy and excited when Jonsson was revealed. She spent two films as Queen Ramonda, who led Wakanda through the loss of T’Challa before dying in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
Bassett is not confirmed to appear in Black Panther 3. Her comments are an endorsement of Jonsson, not an announcement that Ramonda will return through a flashback or another device.

Marvel presented Jonsson as T’Challa’s son and the new Black Panther. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever introduced T’Challa and Nakia’s young son, Toussaint, whose Wakandan name is T’Challa. The third film will move that character into a new stage of his life.
Jonsson is known for Industry, Rye Lane, Alien: Romulus, and The Long Walk. His casting gives the movie a younger lead while keeping the new hero directly connected to Chadwick Boseman’s T’Challa.
Who else is confirmed for Black Panther 3?
Ryan Coogler returns to direct. Letitia Wright is back as Shuri, and Winston Duke returns as M’Baku. Marvel has not released a full cast list or an official plot description.
The announcement leaves several open questions, including how much time has passed, where Jonsson’s character has been living, and how Wakanda responds when another T’Challa claims the mantle.
When does Black Panther 3 release?
Black Panther 3 is scheduled to open in theaters on December 15, 2028. No trailer date has been announced.
Bassett clearly approves of the choice. Jonsson now has to show audiences who this T’Challa is and why he is ready to lead Wakanda.
