The Watcher

Overview

Where to watch

The Watcher follows Nora and Dean Brannock after they spend their savings on a house in Westfield, New Jersey. They hope the move will give their family a fresh start. Instead, anonymous letters threaten them and describe the home as a place someone has been watching for years. Suspicious neighbors make it hard to know whom to trust. Naomi Watts plays Nora, a potter, and Bobby Cannavale plays Dean, a New York City lawyer. Isabel Gravitt plays their daughter Ellie. Margo Martindale plays Maureen, known as Mo, a neighbor who pays attention to everything happening nearby. The original cast also includes Jennifer Coolidge as real-estate agent Karen Calhoun, Richard Kind as Mo’s husband Mitch, and Noma Dumezweni as private investigator Theodora Birch. Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan created the drama. It draws on Reeves Wiedeman’s 2018 article about Derek and Maria Broaddus and the letters they received after buying a house. The Brannocks are fictional, and their experience differs from the real case: the Broadduses never moved into the property. The drama is not a documentary or a complete reconstruction of the investigation. All seven first-season episodes are currently available on Netflix in the United States. Season 1 premiered on October 13, 2022 and carries Netflix’s TV-MA classification. A second season is now in production, with Watts, Cannavale, Martindale and Gravitt confirmed to return. Netflix has not announced its premiere date or episode count. The seven-episode listing refers to the first season, not the upcoming one.
