Overview

Where to watch

The Last First: Winter K2 is a documentary directed by Amir Bar-Lev about the 2021 race to make the first winter ascent of K2. Icelandic mountaineer John Snorri Sigurjónsson and Pakistani climbers Ali and Sajid Sadpara are among its subjects. The father-and-son team and other expeditions share the mountain with paying clients, film crews and climbers pursuing a record.

The film considers the different reasons people undertook the expedition, from personal ambition to earning a living. It uses recordings made on the mountain and later interviews to follow several accounts of the same events. The subject includes dangerous climbing conditions, death and grief; this is a documentary about a real expedition, not a scripted mountaineering drama.

Joe Carey edits, Will Pugh is director of photography, and Tom Hodge composes the music. Producers include Sean Richard, Sarah Thomson, John Battsek, Howard T. Owens and Ben Silverman. The film premiered at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival.

Where to watch: currently streaming on Apple TV in the United States, following its October 2, 2026 release. Apple announced a global premiere on that date, but catalogue and accessibility options may differ by territory. The U.S. version runs 97 minutes, carries a TV-MA rating and offers English closed captions and audio description.
