The Deputy

The Deputy is a 2026 crime thriller starring Duke Nicholson as Toby Sawyer, a rookie officer ordered to guard a dead body by Chief Kreuger, played by William H. Macy. When the corpse disappears, Toby tries to recover it and discovers a web of corruption in the town. Deputy Amanda Jackson, played by Tiffany Haddish, is his closest ally as he faces pressure to stop asking questions. Stephen Dorff, Billie Lourd and Julia Fox are also in the cast.

Matt Sukkar makes his feature directing debut from a screenplay by Carlo Bernard. The film gives Nicholson his first leading role after supporting appearances in Us and In the Hand of Dante. A September 17 preview clip shows Amanda questioning Toby after he ends up behind bars; the scene does not reveal how the investigation ends. Nicholson described Toby as a flawed but good-hearted character in an interview with People and said the independent film was shot in three weeks. Well Go USA lists a September 25, 2026 U.S. theatrical release. The interview also states that digital and on-demand availability begins on that date.
