Ray Gunn

Ray Gunn is an animated detective movie written and directed by Brad Bird. It takes place in Metropia, a huge city imagined as a 1930s view of the future. Flying cars, tall Art Deco buildings and aliens are part of daily life. Raymond Gunn is a private detective who still works cases by getting out and talking to people, even though tiny surveillance robots now do much of that work for others.

Sam Rockwell voices Ray. Scarlett Johansson voices Venus Nova, a famous singer whose problems bring her into Ray’s investigation. Tom Waits voices Eye-Ra, Ray’s one-eyed alien partner. The case involves murder, corruption and the people close to Venus. Bird has described the idea as a mix of classic detective films and science fiction. Netflix released a new trailer on September 23, 2026, showing the city, Ray’s work and Venus’s place in the story. The trailer does not give away the answer to the central mystery.

Ray Gunn is scheduled to open in select theaters on December 4, 2026, including limited 70mm showings, before its December 18 Netflix debut. Those are announced dates, not current streaming availability. The movie is rated PG.
