Overview

The Bennet family has five daughters and an uncertain financial future. When wealthy neighbors arrive, Elizabeth watches her sister Jane grow close to Mr. Bingley while forming an unfavorable opinion of his friend, Darcy. What she hears from other people and what she observes herself do not always agree.

Joe Wright directs this adaptation of Jane Austen’s novel, with Keira Knightley as Elizabeth and Matthew Macfadyen as Darcy. Rosamund Pike plays Jane; Brenda Blethyn and Donald Sutherland play the Bennet parents. Judi Dench appears as Lady Catherine de Bourgh, whose expectations put further pressure on the couple.

The film opened in the United States on November 11, 2005. Focus Features lists a 129-minute runtime and a PG rating. It is a complete, standalone version of Austen’s story, not a continuation of the 1940 film or the television adaptations. The central question is whether Elizabeth and Darcy can revise judgments shaped by social status, family loyalty and their first meeting.
