Onwards and Sideways

Tony Evans is a deputy headteacher who wants to keep his Parkinson’s diagnosis private. Emma Dretzin is a composer, piano teacher and single mother who is more willing to discuss the condition openly. Their paths keep crossing after the clinic visit that changes both of their lives. Rhys Ifans plays Tony and Laura Linney plays Emma. Monica Dolan appears as Tony’s sister Liz, while Rory Kinnear plays Professor Ridge. John Madden directs Paul Mayhew-Archer’s script, and Thomas Newman composed the score. The film has its world premiere at TIFF on September 13, 2026 and opens in UK cinemas on November 6. A US cinema release is planned without an announced date. BBC One and BBC iPlayer will show the film later in 2026.
