Ha-Chan, Shake Your Booty! follows Haru, a Tokyo ballroom dancer played by Rinko Kikuchi. After her husband Luis dies, Haru stops dancing. The story picks up when she returns to her dance studio and meets a new instructor, played by Alberto Guerra. The film is about grief, friendship, attraction and the hard parts of starting again.
Josef Kubota Wladyka directed the film and co-wrote it with Nicholas Huynh. Alejandro Edda plays Luis. The cast also includes YOU and Yoh Yoshida. The film was selected for Sundance and Toronto and won the US Dramatic directing award at Sundance. Wladyka said the story is not his mother’s biography, though her love of ballroom dancing inspired him.
Sony Pictures Classics opens the film in US theaters on September 25, 2026. Check local cinema listings for showtimes. No streaming service or home-release date has been announced.
