Overview

Drifter is an independent 2026 racing drama written, directed by and starring Sung Kang. Kang plays Tree, a racetrack custodian living in a desert town who has a natural talent for drifting but keeps others at a distance after a painful past. Given the chance to compete at a professional event, he learns that skill behind the wheel is not enough. An older mentor and a found family ask him to trust other people. The film’s hero car is a red Toyota AE86 named Lola. Its trailer was released by the Toronto International Film Festival, where Drifter made its world premiere September 12, 2026 and screened again on September 14, 17 and 18. This is a festival premiere, not a broad theatrical or streaming launch. The filmmakers have not published a nationwide theatrical date or a streaming premiere on the official site. Kang is familiar to audiences as Han in the Fast & Furious films, but Drifter is an original story, not an installment in that franchise. Toronto Metropolitan University identified producer Brian Yang, editor and co-producer Lam Nguyen and cinematographer Bruce Thierry Cheung among the team at a September 18 discussion. The official site includes a gallery of the characters and film stills.
