9 to 5

9 to 5 is a 1980 workplace comedy starring Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin and Dolly Parton. Fonda plays Judy Bernly, a new employee who is trying to adjust to office life. Tomlin plays Violet Newstead, an experienced manager whose boss takes credit for her work. Parton plays Doralee Rhodes, a secretary who is the subject of a false workplace rumor. Their boss, Franklin Hart Jr., is played by Dabney Coleman. The three women join forces after finding out how badly he has treated each of them. Their plan to get even soon changes the whole office.

Colin Higgins directed the film and wrote it with Patricia Resnick. Dolly Parton wrote and performed the title song, and this was her first feature-film acting role. The film opened in U.S. theaters on December 19, 1980.

A newly restored presentation is scheduled to return to U.S. theaters for one week, October 9–15, 2026. Disney says the net proceeds from U.S. ticket purchases for that run will support Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library through The Dollywood Foundation. The announcement came a month after Parton’s death. The original 1980 film is also currently listed for streaming in the U.S. on Disney+ and Hulu; Disney has not confirmed that those streams contain the newly restored presentation.
