Yakuza 0 is a story-driven action game set in Japan in 1988, long before the first Yakuza game. You play as Kazuma Kiryu in Kamurocho, a fictional Tokyo entertainment district, and Goro Majima in Sotenbori, a fictional Osaka district. Their stories alternate as a fight over a tiny piece of land grows into a larger crime mystery. You do not need to know the rest of the series to understand this starting point. The serious main plot sits beside funny side stories and activities such as karaoke, arcade games and dancing. When a mission marker sends you across town, you can follow it or stop to see what is happening on the street.

Most fights happen in small groups on the city streets. Kiryu and Majima each learn three fighting styles: a balanced one, a fast one and a heavy-hitting one. You can switch between styles after unlocking them. That makes the shape of the fight matter. A quick foe may be easier to reach with speed, while a crowd around loose objects can reward a stronger style. Money is also how you buy many upgrades, so cash is not only a score. The gallery shows both playable leads, a brawl, a dance-floor activity and the neon streets; those are different sides of the same game, not separate editions.
The original Japanese PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 release was March 12, 2015. The English-language PlayStation 4 release and later PC and Xbox versions came afterward; the Steam page's 2018 date is its PC launch, not the game's first release. This profile is for the original Yakuza 0, not Yakuza 0 Director's Cut. New players can start with the main story, try one side activity when it appears, and practise changing styles in an ordinary street fight before a tougher boss.
