Tomb Raider (2013) starts with Lara Croft and an expedition crew shipwrecked on a dangerous island. Lara is younger and less experienced than in many earlier Tomb Raider games. She has to find her friends, get through old structures and survive the people and wildlife in her way. The story is about how she becomes the explorer players know—not a remake of the original 1996 game.

You move Lara across cliffs, wrecked buildings and underground spaces by climbing, jumping and looking for a safe route. A bow is one of her main tools, both for hunting and fighting. As you explore, you can collect materials and improve equipment at camps. Optional tombs reward a pause to inspect the room, understand its moving parts and solve a small environmental puzzle. The main story also has intense combat and escape scenes; this is not a quiet puzzle game from start to finish.

Crystal Dynamics’ original reboot launched on March 5, 2013, for PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, published by Square Enix. This fiche does not describe the later Definitive Edition. The US and Canadian ESRB rates the original M (Mature 17+) for Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, and Strong Language.
