Thief II: The Metal Age returns Garrett to the City after the events of the first game. The streets are changing as powerful technologies spread, the Mechanists gain influence, and older religious conflicts continue beneath the surface. Garrett's jobs take him through mansions, warehouses, rooftops, streets, cathedrals, and industrial spaces, with fifteen large missions that allow more than one route to the objective.

The original Looking Glass stealth game is played from a first-person view, but shooting is rarely the safest answer. A light gem shows how visible Garrett is, footsteps reveal the material under his boots, and guards react to noise, alarms, and bodies. Blackjack, sword, broadhead arrows, moss arrows, water arrows, rope arrows, scouting tools, and lockpicks each solve a different problem. Missions also track loot and objectives, so thorough exploration can matter even after the main target is found.

Watch the light gem before crossing a doorway and listen before opening it. Buy water arrows for torches, use moss to quiet hard floors, and knock out a guard only where another patrol will not discover the body. Read the objective list, map the exits, and save before experimenting with a new route. Exploration is usually safer when you move slowly enough to notice a second entrance.

This entry covers the original 2000 Windows release, not the 2014 Thief reboot, The Dark Project, or Thief Gold.
