The Witness places you alone on a bright island with paths that lead through gardens, beaches, ruins and forests. You walk around in first person and find square puzzle panels set into doors, posts and walls. On a basic panel, you trace a line from its starting point to an endpoint. Later panels add new symbols and rules, and a clue may come from another panel nearby or from the way the surroundings look. The goal is to notice what changed, test an idea and watch which route opens.

You do not have to finish every area in a fixed order. If a row of panels feels impossible, walk away, explore another part of the island and come back after learning a similar rule somewhere else. That freedom is useful, but it can also make the island confusing at first. A practical way to play is to solve a few panels in one area, follow any cable or opened gate they affect, and remember where you stopped. The gallery below shows different regions of the island so you can recognise how widely its environments change.

Thekla developed and published The Witness. Its original Windows PC and PlayStation 4 releases arrived in January 2016; Xbox, mobile and Mac versions came later. The game has more than 500 puzzles, but you do not need to solve all of them just to understand the central idea. It is a single-player game about learning to read the island, with no combat system to master.
