The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom continues the story after Breath of the Wild. Link searches for Princess Zelda as a mysterious gloom spreads through Hyrule. The kingdom is larger than it first appears: you can travel over familiar fields, climb to floating sky islands, and descend into dark areas below the surface. You can follow the main quest or spend time finding shrines, caves, equipment, and side stories in almost any order.

Link's new abilities are the heart of the adventure. Ultrahand lets you pick up and attach objects to make bridges, boats, and other contraptions. Fuse combines a weapon, shield, or arrow with another object for a new effect. Ascend moves Link through a solid ceiling above him, while Recall reverses an object's movement. The game does not require one perfect solution to most obstacles; experimenting with what you find nearby is often the point.
Combat, exploration, and environmental puzzles all use the same open-ended tools. Nintendo developed and published the game, which first launched on Nintendo Switch on May 12, 2023. A later Switch 2 edition does not change the original release year. This is a sequel, but players new to Zelda can still understand the basic goal: search the changed kingdom, find Zelda, and learn what caused the upheaval.
