Link's search for Navi leads him into Termina, a parallel world where a Skull Kid carrying Majora's Mask has set the moon on a collision course with the land. Tatl joins Link, while the Happy Mask Salesman asks him to recover the stolen mask. Recovering his Ocarina gives Link a way to repeat the three-day rescue effort. The N64 original is a focused adventure about people living through the same deadline.

Time is the main system. Playing the Song of Time sends Link back to the first morning, while the cycle preserves selected progress and resets ordinary events. Termina's residents follow schedules, so a side quest can mean watching a character's route, choosing when to intervene, then repeating the loop with better information. Masks change Link's movement and interactions: the Deku Mask reaches plants and skips across water, the Goron Mask rolls and punches, and the Zora Mask swims and fights underwater.
The four main dungeons, field secrets, and optional mask quests reward players who keep notes rather than rush the clock. Start by learning Clock Town's layout and using the Song of Time to save and reset before exploring a new cycle; the game becomes easier to read once you treat each three-day run as a planned attempt. The 2000 Nintendo 64 version is distinct from Majora's Mask 3D, the Wii/Wii U Virtual Console editions, and the later Nintendo Switch Online presentation.
