The Last Guardian pairs a small boy with Trico, an enormous feathered creature with ears, horns and a long tail. They meet in a strange ruined place and need each other to find a way out. The boy can fit into small spaces; Trico can reach places far beyond him.

The adventure is built around that difference. You explore old buildings, climb and work through environmental puzzles with your companion nearby. Progress often means noticing how the two can help each other, not simply finding a stronger weapon. Trico's size can make a broken walkway or a high wall feel very different from the boy's point of view.

Trust is part of the story as well as the way you move through the ruins. Trico is presented as a creature with its own reactions, rather than another character you directly control. The bond grows through shared moments of danger and help, with much of the story carried by what you see the pair do.

Developed by genDESIGN and SIE Japan Studio under Fumito Ueda's direction, the game launched for PlayStation 4 on December 6, 2016. It can also be played on PlayStation 5 through backward compatibility; that is the PS4 game, not a separate native PS5 release.
