Tetris Effect keeps the familiar goal of Tetris: rotate falling shapes and fit them together to make complete horizontal lines. When a line is full, it disappears and makes room for more pieces. The board is still the part you must watch, but the world around it changes with your play. Music, colours and particles shift as you move, turn and place each piece.

Journey Mode takes you through a sequence of themed stages. A stage can begin quietly and then speed up, so it helps to leave space for a long straight piece and keep an eye on the next-piece preview. The Zone ability lets you pause the fall for a short time and clear several lines together. Separate Effect Modes offer different goals and ways to practise. The gallery shows the small central board in four very different stages: the scenery is striking, but the block stack is where you make each decision.

Enhance and Monstars developed the original Tetris Effect, published by Enhance for PlayStation 4 on November 9, 2018. You can play it on a normal screen or use the optional original PlayStation VR headset. Later editions and the Connected update added platforms and multiplayer features; those should not be mistaken for what the 2018 PS4 launch contained.
