Shogun: Total War opens in 1542, after the shogunate has collapsed and Japan is divided among rival clans. The player chooses a daimyo and works toward control of Kyoto while managing provinces, income, recruitment, diplomacy, agents, and family succession. The campaign map advances by seasons, and decisions about where to expand can matter as much as the battle that follows.

When armies meet, the game switches to a real-time battlefield. Archers, yari infantry, samurai, cavalry, monks, ninja, and other units use terrain, formation, morale, weather, and timing differently. A bridge, hill, forest, or narrow pass can change the value of a unit before the first charge. Victories can open a route across the campaign map, but an army that wins while losing its best troops may leave the province vulnerable next season.

Begin with a clan whose borders are manageable, learn how koku income supports recruitment and buildings, and keep scouts or agents active near likely invasions. Use the campaign map to choose favorable ground before accepting a fight. In battle, protect the general, watch morale, and avoid sending cavalry into a prepared spear line. Save before an important winter turn because the next season can change both finances and diplomacy.

This page covers the base 2000 Shogun: Total War, not the Mongol Invasion expansion bundled in later Warlord, Gold, or Steam Collection editions, and not 2011's Total War: Shogun 2.
