Resident Evil Village continues the story of Ethan Winters after Resident Evil 7. His daughter Rose is taken from the family, and Ethan follows the trail to an isolated village in Eastern Europe. The streets, houses and nearby Castle Dimitrescu hide different enemies and pieces of the mystery. Alcina Dimitrescu and her daughters are only some of the people who stand between Ethan and Rose; the story moves through several distinct places rather than remaining in one building.

The original campaign is played in first person. You search rooms for supplies, read clues, open blocked routes and decide when a fight is worth the ammunition it will cost. More open spaces and a wider range of weapons give it a different rhythm from the Baker house in Resident Evil 7, but managing health, ammunition and inventory still matters. The Duke is a merchant who helps Ethan obtain and improve equipment. If you are new to the series, the immediate goal is easy to follow: find Rose and survive the places that stand in the way.
After finishing the main story, players can unlock The Mercenaries, a separate action-focused mode. The later Winters’ Expansion added a third-person camera option for the main campaign, extra Mercenaries content and Shadows of Rose, a new story set years after the base game. Resident Evil Village Gold Edition bundles the base game with that expansion. Those additions should not be mistaken for parts of the original May 2021 release.
Capcom developed and published Resident Evil Village for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PC on May 7, 2021. Some digital storefronts display May 6 because of local release timing; the original publisher announcement uses May 7.
