Ethan Winters receives a message from his missing wife, Mia, and follows it to a remote property in Louisiana. The Baker family lives there, but this is not a normal house visit. Resident Evil 7 keeps most of its story inside the estate and asks you to search rooms, unlock paths and stay alive long enough to understand what happened. It is a standalone starting point for someone curious about Resident Evil, although the game rewards fans who recognise the series' habit of hiding clues and supplies in ordinary-looking places. Expect disturbing scenes and violence, not a light mystery.

You see the house through Ethan's eyes. A closed door, a small object on a shelf or a note may matter later, so it pays to look around before running forward. The game has guns, but ammunition and healing items are limited. Aiming is only one part of staying alive: you also need to manage a small inventory, decide when to fight, and return to a safe room when you need to save or reorganise. The house gradually opens up as you find keys and solve puzzles. The first-person view makes tight corridors feel especially dangerous, and the optional PlayStation VR mode on the original PS4 version was another way to experience that view.

Capcom released Resident Evil 7 Biohazard on January 24, 2017 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. Steam may show January 23 in some regions because digital stores use different time zones; Capcom's launch announcement gives January 24 for the North American release.
