Pikmin 4 begins with a rescue mission on a strange planet. You create an explorer, find missing Rescue Corps members and other castaways, and gather treasure that helps power the crew's ship. Because the characters are tiny, ordinary objects such as flowerpots, toys, and garden paths become large obstacles and landmarks. The adventure is welcoming to players who have never met a Pikmin before.

Pikmin are small plant-like creatures that follow your explorer. You throw or direct them to fight creatures, carry objects, and open routes. Different colors have different strengths: Red Pikmin can handle fire, Blue Pikmin travel through water, and Ice Pikmin can freeze enemies or even a body of water. Your rescue dog Oatchi can carry the team, clear obstacles, and help with tasks. You choose which Pikmin to bring into the field, then adapt when a puzzle or danger needs another type.
The game also has caves, daytime exploration, and night expeditions that change the pace. Nintendo developed and published Pikmin 4 for Nintendo Switch on July 21, 2023. Its official cover shows the Pikmin and Oatchi in the oversized garden world, with the original game logo.
