Outer Wilds makes you the newest astronaut in a small space-exploration program. Your first stop is Timber Hearth, where the other Hearthians help you prepare for launch. After that, you can point your ship at any planet you can reach. A strange time loop keeps bringing you back, but what you learn carries forward. This is a mystery to investigate, not a race to collect stronger weapons. The less of its big discoveries you know in advance, the more rewarding each landing feels.

Bring curiosity rather than a fixed route. Your ship log records places you have visited, important clues and connections between them; its rumor view is particularly useful when you are not sure what to explore next. Your translator lets you read Nomai writing, and the signalscope can help you locate signals you hear but cannot yet see. Planets change as time passes, so an entrance that looks impossible on one visit may be worth checking at another point in the loop. You can make progress by understanding a location even if your astronaut does not survive the trip.
Mobius Digital developed the game and Annapurna Interactive published its original May 30, 2019 launch for Xbox One and PC through the Epic Games Store. PlayStation 4 and Steam releases followed later, as did editions for newer systems and Nintendo Switch. Outer Wilds: Echoes of the Eye is an expansion, not a different name for the 2019 game. This profile uses official original key art for the cover and publisher-supplied gameplay images for the gallery; the screenshots show exploration without giving away the central solution.
