Mae Borowski has left college and come home to Possum Springs, a former mining town where the people she knew have kept living while she was away. Night in the Woods follows her as she walks the streets, reconnects with friends and notices that the town—and her relationships—feel different now. There is a mystery in the woods, but the game spends time on ordinary conversations too. Its colorful animal characters and jokes sit alongside heavier subjects such as money worries, loneliness and change.

You move Mae through a side-view town, stop to speak with people and explore places that open as the days go by. Dialogue is a large part of the experience. You do not need to optimize a build or master combat to follow the story; the important habit is to slow down, look around and revisit familiar streets after a new day begins. Different friends and activities can take Mae to different scenes, making the town feel like a place to know rather than a checklist to clear. The picture-book art can look playful, but this is a story about young adults and their difficult moments, not a children's game.

Infinite Fall developed Night in the Woods, and Finji published its PC launch on February 21, 2017. It later reached consoles and other computer platforms. The page uses the official title-bearing cover and five developer-supplied screenshots, showing Mae in town, with other characters and in the game's more unsettling moments. The gallery is spoiler-light: it shows the mood and places without spelling out the mystery's answer.
