NieR:Automata begins in a ruined future where android soldiers are sent to Earth to fight machines. The early hours follow 2B, a combat-focused android, and 9S, who supports her with scanning and hacking. You can move through wide areas, take side quests from people you meet and fight machines with fast close-range attacks. A small flying Pod helps from a distance, so battles are not only about swinging a sword.

The game often changes the way a fight is shown. One encounter may feel like a third-person action game, while another uses a side-on view or has you dodge streams of glowing projectiles. You can equip chips to adjust useful things such as health information or how your character fights. The gallery shows 2B, machine enemies, combat effects and the worn-down city so you can see the difference between a quiet trip and a battle. The story has several routes; reaching the first credits does not mean you have seen every part of it. This page avoids explaining the later twists.
PlatinumGames developed NieR:Automata and Square Enix published it. The first release was on PlayStation 4 in Japan on February 23, 2017; North America followed on March 7, with the Windows version later in March. Xbox and Switch versions came after that. The original date and platform in this profile refer to the Japanese PS4 debut, not a later edition.
