Metro Exodus is a single-player first-person shooter set after nuclear war. You play as Artyom, who leaves the tunnels beneath Moscow with a group of survivors aboard the Aurora, a rebuilt steam train. Their search for a safer home takes them across Russia through a story that spans a year.

The journey mixes large outdoor areas with more direct story sections. You explore settlements and wilderness, gather supplies and face both human enemies and mutated creatures. These are separate regions joined by the train journey, not one uninterrupted open-world map. Snow, forests and other changing landscapes give each part of the trip a different setting.

Fighting is only part of survival. You can approach dangers quietly, search for materials and use them to craft supplies or change your weapons. Some areas call for a gas mask, and the game’s first-person view keeps your weapon and survival equipment close to the action. Choices during the journey can affect the people traveling with Artyom.

4A Games developed Metro Exodus and Deep Silver published it. The original release was February 15, 2019 for Windows PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. It reached Steam on February 14, 2020. The later PC Enhanced Edition is a separate version with different hardware needs, not the 2019 release date used here.
