Game Boy Color

Known in Japan as Metal Gear: Ghost Babel and in North America and Europe as Metal Gear Solid, this is a Game Boy Color original, not a handheld version of the 1998 PlayStation game. Seven years after the fall of Outer Heaven, Solid Snake is pulled from retirement when an armed group seizes a nuclear-capable Metal Gear. His orders are to infiltrate Galuade, the fortress built over the old site, and stop the Black Chamber.

The game returns to an overhead, grid-like stealth view. Snake watches patrols, hides in grass, crawls under cameras, hugs walls to look around corners, taps surfaces to draw guards, and uses weapons only when a quiet route fails. A transceiver carries calls and mission support, while keycards, equipment, boss encounters, and stage objectives give the campaign a clear infiltration rhythm. The story is an alternate sequel, so Galuade belongs to its own continuity rather than Shadow Moses.

Thirteen stages award mission ranks, Special mode adds extra objectives after the campaign, and 180 VR Missions provide short practice challenges. A two-player Versus mode uses the Game Link Cable. Start with the radar and learn each guard's route before testing a shortcut; the small screen makes patience more useful than shooting. The original 2000 Game Boy Color cartridge is separate from the PlayStation Metal Gear Solid and later handheld or collection releases.
