Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance stars Raiden, a cyborg soldier who also appears in the Metal Gear series. It is an action spin-off rather than a traditional slow, stealth-focused Metal Gear game. Raiden moves quickly through stages, fights robotic enemies and confronts rival cyborgs while uncovering a military conspiracy. You can follow its immediate mission even if this is your first Metal Gear game, though some character history comes from earlier titles.

The main tool is Raiden’s high-frequency sword. In Blade Mode, the action slows and you choose the direction of a cut, which lets you slice through an enemy’s weak point or a piece of the environment. A successful close-range fight depends on timing blocks and counters, not just pressing attack as fast as possible. The screen can look busy when sparks, enemies and the blade cursor appear together; focus first on the foe nearest Raiden and the direction of its incoming strike.
PlatinumGames and Konami released the original game on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in North America on February 19, 2013; PC followed in 2014. The original US and Canadian ESRB rating is M (Mature 17+) for Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, and Strong Language.
