Cole Phelps is a police detective in 1947 Los Angeles. L.A. Noire follows his work through cases involving traffic crimes, murder, drugs and arson. The city is more than a place to drive: crime scenes, witnesses and the evidence you collect help connect each investigation.

You search locations for clues, speak to witnesses and suspects, then compare their answers with what you have found. The characters' recorded facial performances are part of the questioning scenes, but expressions are not a replacement for evidence. Driving, pursuits and shootouts break up the slower detective work. The gallery shows conversations, police briefings and searches alongside action, rather than treating the game as only a shooter.

Team Bondi developed the original game with Rockstar Games. It first released for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in North America on May 17, 2011, followed by Europe and Australia on May 20. Rockstar Leeds developed the PC Complete Edition, released in North America on November 8 that year. The official cover and screenshots here are publisher PC store assets; they are not presented as the original console box or console captures. The 2017 ports and The VR Case Files are separate later releases.
