Into the Breach puts you in charge of three mechs fighting giant creatures called Vek. Each mission takes place on a small square grid. At the start of your turn, the game shows where the enemies are aiming. You move your mechs and use their weapons to stop those attacks before ending the turn. Often the best move is to push an enemy away from a building rather than try to defeat it at once. A weapon can also move an enemy into a position where another attack will hit it.

The buildings are more than background scenery: they hold the people you are trying to protect. The power-grid meter at the top of the battle screen tracks the damage the cities can still take. A mission can also ask you to complete extra objectives, such as protecting a particular structure. The battle screen shows your mechs down the left, the enemy attack order and the mission objectives, so you can check what is at risk before choosing a move. Between missions, you choose another area and can improve a mech with equipment and reactor power.

Subset Games developed and published Into the Breach for PC on February 27, 2018; other platforms followed. Its later Advanced Edition added more squads, weapons, enemies and challenges. The basic idea stayed the same: read the enemy plan, protect the buildings and make each move count.
