Inscryption first places you at a wooden table across from a shadowy opponent. The cards look like woodland creatures, but the rules quickly turn unsettling: you may need to sacrifice one creature to play another, decide which cards deserve space in your deck, and survive encounters that change the board. The cabin around the table is not just scenery. Getting up to inspect its objects is part of the game, and a clue found away from the cards can help you progress when the next match feels impossible.

Read full overview

This is a single-player adventure built around deckbuilding, turn-based card battles and escape-room-style puzzles. Your deck changes as you find new cards and make decisions between fights. Some losses send you back through part of the challenge, so learning a card’s cost and effect matters more than memorising one perfect hand. The story gradually reveals why you are at the table and what the cards hide. Its structure changes later, but explaining each shift here would spoil the surprise that connects the game’s puzzles and horror.

If you are arriving from an ordinary trading-card game, expect more than a sequence of matches. Look around the cabin between battles, examine unfamiliar symbols on cards, and pay attention when a puzzle seems to refer to an object outside the table. There is no need to buy card packs or play against other people. The official Steam listing calls out single-player play, and the game’s story progresses through the challenges you face on your own.

Daniel Mullins Games developed Inscryption and Devolver Digital published it first on Windows PC on October 19, 2021. Console versions followed later, including PlayStation, Nintendo Switch and Xbox. This page uses the original release year rather than treating those ports as a new game. The official cover shows the card-table figure and native Inscryption title, which belongs on a game detail page.
