Hitman: Absolution follows Agent 47 after a contract pulls him into a personal conflict. Missions place him in locations full of patrols, bystanders and potential routes. He can observe a room, use a disguise or environmental opening, and move quietly toward an objective. The game also permits direct gunfire, though it changes how a scene unfolds. This is the 2012 Absolution release, not the later World of Assassination trilogy.

The five current official Steam images show Agent 47, an interior encounter, a rainy city view, a close-range takedown and a tense meeting near a staircase. Together they illustrate both the stealth and action sides of the game without supplying an exact mission solution. The original release was November 20, 2012 on Windows PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The present Steam storefront displays a November 19 date in some locales; the developer's release history identifies November 20 worldwide.

IO Interactive developed Hitman: Absolution, and Square Enix published the original edition. The U.S. ESRB rates it M (Mature 17+) for Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Partial Nudity, Sexual Themes, Strong Language and Use of Drugs. Its content is more explicit than the covert-play premise alone suggests.
