Hakuoki: Edo Blossoms continues the story begun in Hakuoki: Kyoto Winds. Chizuru and the Shinsengumi face a changing world, and the relationships built in the first game become more important as the danger grows. Romance runs through a story about loyalty, conflict and supernatural secrets, with a historical setting that gives the characters plenty to lose.
You choose a character path at the start and follow that part of the story through conversations and decisions. The game includes twelve character stories and different endings, so the person you follow changes the romance and the events you see. This is still a visual novel rather than a sword-fighting action game: the important input is what you decide during the story, even when the characters themselves are in battle.
For a first playthrough of this pair, read Kyoto Winds before Edo Blossoms and continue with the same romance character if you want that relationship to follow naturally. Starting here skips the introductions and much of the shared history. It suits someone who already wants to see how a particular Hakuoki relationship develops, but it is not a promise of an easy or cheerful ending.
