Gears 5 follows Kait Diaz as the war against the Swarm reaches another turning point. Kait leaves her unit to learn why she is connected to the enemy, while the people closest to her try to keep her safe. The campaign moves from ruined cities to snow-covered ground and keeps the squad's relationships in view alongside the fighting. You do not need to know every earlier Gears story beat to understand that Kait is looking for answers about herself and the Swarm, though returning characters have a longer history for series fans.

The game is a third-person shooter: the camera stays behind your character as you move between cover, aim and fight. The campaign can be played alone or with other people. Jack, a small flying robot, can support the squad, and newer players can use the game's Boot Camp to learn the basics. Beyond the story, Horde asks a team to survive waves of enemies, Escape sends a smaller group into an enemy hive, and Versus is for matches against other players. These modes have different goals, so a player who enjoys the campaign does not have to learn them all at once.
The Coalition developed Gears 5 and Xbox Game Studios published it for Xbox One and Windows PC on September 10, 2019. Some Ultimate Edition owners and subscribers played from September 6 through early access; that was not the standard worldwide launch date. Xbox Series X and S versions came later. The gallery shows Kait, her squad, snowy story scenes and active combat rather than five near-identical cover images.
