Final Fantasy VII Remake retells and expands the Midgar opening of the 1997 role-playing game. Cloud Strife, a former SOLDIER working as a mercenary, joins an Avalanche operation against the Shinra company. The story moves through city streets, industrial spaces and the lives of people caught between the corporation and the resistance. You do not need to have played the original to meet this cast, but this is only the first part of a larger remake project, not the complete 1997 story in one game.

Battles happen in real time: move, attack, block and switch between characters. Ordinary attacks help fill an Active Time Battle, or ATB, gauge. Once it has a charge, open the command menu to spend it on an ability, spell or item. Enemies have a Pressure and Stagger system, so using an effective move at the right time can create a brief opening for much greater damage. Outside combat, you explore Midgar, talk to people and take side quests. The menu also lets you equip Materia, crystals that grant magic and other abilities.
Square Enix developed and published Final Fantasy VII Remake for PlayStation 4 on April 10, 2020. Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade is a later expanded version for PS5 and PC, with an extra Yuffie episode on supported platforms.
