Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon is a separate, stand-alone game, so you do not need Far Cry 3 to play it. Its joke is that it acts like an over-the-top 1980s science-fiction action movie imagining the far-off future of 2007. You play Rex Power Colt, a cybernetic soldier sent to a hostile island with enemy troops, mutant animals and huge Blood Dragons that fire lasers from their eyes.

Most of the time you see through Rex’s eyes. You can sneak into an outpost or rush in with guns, explosives and close-range attacks. Clearing outposts opens more room to explore. Blood Dragons are dangerous to Rex and enemy soldiers alike, so pay attention when one appears near a fight. The bright pink, purple and blue look, electronic music and deliberately cheesy dialogue are part of the game’s identity, not an error in your screen settings.

Ubisoft first released the original game on PlayStation 3 on April 30, 2013; PC and Xbox 360 followed in early May. Do not confuse it with the later Classic Edition. In the US and Canada, the ESRB rates it M (Mature 17+) for Blood, Partial Nudity, Sexual Content, Strong Language, and Violence.
