Dishonored puts you in the mask of Corvo Attano, the royal protector blamed for the murder of Empress Jessamine Kaldwin. Her daughter Emily has been taken, and Dunwall is already suffering through a deadly rat plague. The story gives Corvo a reason to seek out the people behind the attack, but it lets you decide how he reaches them.

A mission is not one corridor with one correct answer. From the first-person view, you can watch a guard’s route, find a higher entrance and sneak past; you can also fight with a sword, crossbow and other tools. The supernatural power Blink moves Corvo to a nearby spot, so rooftops and ledges become useful routes rather than just scenery. You can avoid killing, use force, or switch between the two. The game tracks the chaos your actions cause, and the world and ending respond to those choices. The gallery below shows Dunwall, a high approach, combat, a Tallboy patrol and one of Corvo’s powers.

Arkane Studios made the original game, published by Bethesda Softworks for PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in North America on October 9, 2012. Steam lists its North American PC availability as October 8; the date above is the original broad release date. The later Definitive Edition is a different release and is not counted as a 2012 platform here. The U.S. ESRB rates the original M (Mature 17+) for Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Sexual Themes and Strong Language.
