In Death Stranding, Sam Porter Bridges is a courier crossing a damaged version of the United States. Communities have become isolated after a mysterious event, and Sam is asked to connect them through a communications network. Deliveries are the heart of the game: accept an order, prepare your equipment, choose a route and carry the cargo to its destination. The story brings in people from each settlement and explains the unusual terms as Sam reaches them, so you do not need to understand every mystery before the first delivery.

Walking is a real challenge here. Cargo has weight and height, steep ground can throw Sam off balance, rivers can sweep him away and a fall can damage a package. Examine the map before leaving, take useful tools such as a ladder when you have one, and use the balance controls when the load starts to tilt. Other players can leave helpful structures in your world through the game's online system, but the story can be played on your own. Threats include human raiders and invisible creatures called BTs; early on, careful movement is usually safer than trying to fight everything. As the game grows, vehicles and new equipment change how far you can travel in one trip.
Kojima Productions developed Death Stranding and Sony Interactive Entertainment published the original PlayStation 4 game on November 8, 2019. A Windows PC version arrived later, while Death Stranding Director's Cut is a newer edition with extra material on later systems. The 2019 date on this profile belongs to the original PS4 release, not the Director's Cut. Its official game cover may include the native title; screenshots show Sam, his cargo and the world he crosses.
