Dark Souls follows a custom-made undead adventurer through Lordran, a world of ruined castles, steep paths and dangerous creatures. Its areas connect at different heights, so a distant tower or a passage below you can become part of a later route. Exploration means watching the surroundings as well as surviving the next encounter.

Weapons, armor and magic help shape the character. Bonfires provide checkpoints where health and magic can be restored, but resting also brings many defeated enemies back. Huge bosses demand a different approach from ordinary opponents. The original game also used player messages, cooperative summons and invasions; those historical features are not a promise that every old platform’s online service is still available.
FromSoftware developed Dark Souls. The original PlayStation 3 release was September 22, 2011 in Japan, followed by western PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 releases that year. Namco Bandai Games handled western publishing. Windows PC received Prepare to Die Edition in 2012; Dark Souls Remastered is a separate 2018 version. The cover here is the original Japanese PS3 package, and the gallery uses the original publisher’s game images.
