Chicory: A Colorful Tale

The world is viewed from above. Move your character through Picnic Province and point the Brush at objects to test what paint changes. Some plants grow or move when colored; other obstacles need an ability gained later. If a route does not respond, look for another path or a different thing to paint rather than assuming you must fill every blank space. You can color people and scenery freely, but the story also gives you tasks from animal residents and reasons to return to places you have seen before.

The game leaves room for personal style. You can collect clothing, furniture and new brush looks, and the official site includes local co-op so another person can paint beside you. That second player does not turn the story into a competitive challenge. The music is by Lena Raine, while Greg Lobanov led the small development team with artists and sound designers credited on the official site. It is an adventure about learning to use the Brush while meeting the people affected by the missing color.

Chicory launched on June 10, 2021 for PC and PlayStation 4 and 5, published by Finji. The Nintendo Switch release followed later that year. The vertical official cover shows the dog with a Brush under the native Chicory title; the gallery shows how white areas, painted scenery and the color wheel look inside the game. This helps a new player tell a puzzle scene from a place they have simply not colored yet.
