Battlefield 4 is a first-person military shooter: the camera shows the world through a soldier’s eyes. Its single-player campaign follows a US Marine squad caught in an international crisis. The larger draw is multiplayer, where two teams fight over objectives on maps that can change as buildings collapse or other major events happen.

You can fight on foot, then move into tanks, helicopters, jets or boats when a map offers them. In Conquest, teams capture and hold marked areas instead of simply chasing kills. The right role depends on what your team needs: a medic can revive teammates, an engineer can deal with vehicles, and a scout can spot threats from a distance. A famous example of the game’s destruction is the skyscraper on the Siege of Shanghai map, which can fall during a match and alter the space below.
DICE and Electronic Arts launched the original Battlefield 4 on October 29, 2013, for PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360; newer consoles received it later. This page is for the base game, not its Premium Edition or add-on packs. The US and Canadian ESRB rating is M (Mature 17+) for Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, and Strong Language.
