Battlefield 3 is a first-person military shooter: you see the fighting through a soldier's eyes rather than watching from above. Its original release included a story campaign, separate cooperative missions and online team battles. The gallery shows the range of spaces and roles, from narrow city streets and a subway escalator to a fighter jet above open countryside.

Infantry weapons are only part of the game. Vehicles include tanks, helicopters and jets, while destructible parts of the environment can change cover and routes. The Frostbite 2 engine supports the large battlefields and damaged buildings. Different maps create different problems: a tight passage limits movement in a way that an open vehicle route does not. These are features of the original game, not a promise that every old platform still has working online modes.
DICE developed Battlefield 3 and Electronic Arts published it. The first North American release was October 25, 2011 for Windows PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. EA ended online services for the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions on November 7, 2024; those console versions should not be chosen for online play today. The official cover shown here is Premium Edition artwork from the publisher's PC store listing, not a claimed original 2011 retail box. The six gallery images are from EA's base-game page.
