Suzanne Collins's Hunger Games stories take place in Panem, where the Capitol uses a deadly televised contest to control the districts. Katniss Everdeen volunteers in place of her younger sister and enters the arena alongside Peeta Mellark. Their mentor, Haymitch Abernathy, has survived the Games himself.
Jennifer Lawrence plays Katniss in four films released from 2012 to 2015. The Hunger Games and Catching Fire adapt the first two novels; Mockingjay is divided into two films. The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, released in 2023, moves back to the 10th Games and follows a young Coriolanus Snow mentoring Lucy Gray Baird.
Sunrise on the Reaping follows Haymitch during the 50th Games, 24 years before Katniss's first arena. Its film adaptation is scheduled for November 20, 2026. The prequels share Panem's history with Katniss's story but center on different characters and different editions of the competition.
